Sometimes things come together serendipitously – such as the weekend of Nov 15, when we were able to combine a conference trip for me with a visit to New York the weekend of Rohit’s orientation for his new job.  And we were able to see Hero and Rishi too! It was a hectic weekend, but [...]

(Saturday in NYC post coming soon)
Sunday morning was a whirlwind of activity as we got ready to leave Flushing.  We were headed to two different airports – first, La Guardia to pick up our rental car, then JFK to drop off Rohit for his flight home.  We were headed to Boston for the second purpose [...]

‘My’ polling place, just before the polls closed here in Ohio.  The people with the banner are supporting Issue 16, the funding levy to build a new high school (which passed on this, the third try).  New Zealanders, note the yard signs!!

On our last day in Savannah Ranjit had to work, while I took the last opportunity for some sightseeing in the morning before work and travel in the afternoon and evening.

Sunday saw us out for breakfast early (not too early, thanks to the time change) and then a day spent exploring the Sea Islands area and South Carolina.  Then it was back to Savannah for a night at the Westin hotel, across the river from Savannah.

I was lucky to get a paper accepted to this year’s American Educational Studies Association conference, which was held in Savannah, GA.  I was even luckier that Ranjit could come with me for the whole trip, as he is ‘working from home’ for a month.
Savannah is a really interesting place to visit.  It is quite [...]

Well, it’s been a weird week here in Ohio after the windstorm last Sunday.  I don’t quite know how to describe it – ‘the biggest in history?’  It was certainly big in retrospect and in effect but at the time it just felt like a bit of wind.  There wasn’t even any rain!  It certainly [...]

‘Nuff said. Back now!

I’ve just come back from New Market, Tennessee, where i had the privilege of participating in the 75th anniversary celebration of the Highlander Center.  It was pretty darn incredible.  Even just travelling to the Highlander Center is like a pilgrimage – a chance to walk in the footsteps of leaders of so many social [...]

What did you do on 07/07/07? Lots of people got married; the new 7 wonders of the world were announced; and Al Gore hosted the Live Earth concerts. Meanwhile, the good people at the Nasher Sculpture center had planned a James Bond themed event that we decided was our way to celebrate the [...]

Frequently asked questions:
* No, it didn’t hurt!  I have a pretty high pain tolerance, and even I was surprised at how little of anything I felt.  Pamela the piercer said it would feel like she pulled out a nose hair, but it didn’t even feel like that – just like digging a fingernail in for [...]

We interrupt this trip recap to bring you:

‘Nuff said.

Mum reached Dallas on the evening of July 3rd. I met her at the airport and gave her a quick tiki-tour of the Metroplex By Night, before we headed home to meet the dogs and have a grand tour of our wee apartment.

When she started planning her trip, I’d suggested she come on the [...]

The last few times my parents have visited me, in both Hong Kong and the US, i’ve spent at least part of the trip seeing hardly any of them because i have too much going on in the rest of my life.
So when I realized I’d have some relative down-time between the end of my [...]

Remember Iraq?
Oh yeah, that old thing.
But it’s still goin’ on; it’s still ridiculous, and, as i mentioned wryly during a conversation with Dad today, Ranjit’s and my taxes are still paying for it.
So i was interested to learn that one of my classmates from school in Hong Kong has just returned from Iraq. (Hi, [...]

Winged Migration was on television tonight, and the dogs were paying absolutely no attention as always – until the show shifted focus to a flock of Canadian geese. At the first honk, two sets of ears pricked up; as the flock soared across oceans and the honks grew more frequent, two dogs [...]

Even before i was close enough to see visible signs of the hurricane, a stark reminder appeared beneath the New Orleans skyline: the Superdome. It looks none the worse for wear as i drove past, but i think the images from the days after the hurricane are seared into most everyone’s minds.
I followed [...]

New Orleans posts – with photos! – are coming, i promise.
In the meantime, here’s the Roadkill Report – casualties of the road i spotted during my driving in Louisiana. Almost all of these were sighted on the stretch of Louisiana Rte 1 that follows the Mississippi river, between Baton Rouge and Alexandria.
- 15 armadillos;
- [...]
